Facelift

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is an aesthetic surgical procedure performed to correct sagging, wrinkles, and volume loss that occur with aging. This procedure tightens the skin and muscle tissue on the lower part of the face, removes excess skin, and smooths out the soft tissues, resulting in a more youthful appearance. A facelift particularly tightens areas such as the jawline, double chin, and cheeks, and it enhances the definition of facial contours.

Procedure

Facelift surgery is generally performed under general anesthesia, although local anesthesia and sedation may be used in some cases. The surgeon typically makes an incision starting in front of the ear and extending around the ear to the back. This incision allows access to the subcutaneous tissues and the removal of excess skin if necessary. Afterward, the muscles and tissues in the lower face are tightened, the skin is stretched, and the excess skin is removed. The incisions are then closed, and a light bandage is placed over the area.

Recovery Process

After a facelift, mild pain, swelling, and bruising may be experienced during the first few days. Stitches are typically removed by the end of the first week, and patients can begin to move more freely. Swelling usually subsides significantly within 2-3 weeks, but the full recovery process may take 3-6 months. During this time, it is important for patients to avoid sun exposure, refrain from intense physical activities, and follow the surgeon's instructions. The results of a facelift typically last for a long time and offer a fresher, more youthful appearance.
